Bon Enfant Cast a Super Spell at Their Toronto Debut

The Montreal collective’s high octane polished psych-pop made a big impression on a small room.

In a box at the back of the Baby G, Montreal-born quintet Bon Enfant took the stage for the first time in Toronto. The disco ball–adorned venue was intimate and just under half full, but its energy far exceeded the numbers—showgoers wasted no time jumping to their feet to dance as the band launched into their set.  

A ‘supergroup’ of independently successful Quebecois artists, the band gave an emphatically joyful performance. Their well-honed signature sound felt like being suspended in an experimental indie rock cloud—ethereal yet grounded, eclectic but cohesive. Touring behind their new album Demande Spéciale, they opened with the title track and sprinkled in older fan favourites like “Aujourd’hui” and “Magie”—70s-tinged tunes made fresh with modern flourishes.

 

 

The set showcased their dynamic range and tight chemistry, all anchored by lead singer Daphné Brissette’s magnetic stage presence. She moved through the set with a tambourine, shakers, and, at one point, a cowbell and stick, bringing both whimsy and rhythm to the show.

While their next stop is a hometown gig in Montreal (June 13 at MTELUS) with a crowd nearly 10 times the size, performances like this are bound to keep drawing new fans west of Gatineau. The show closed to minutes of applause, drawing Bon Enfant out for one last tune, and with a promising sentiment for Toronto fans to see them again soon.
