Charlie Houston Is Gonna Be Big

Big After I Die marks a confident debut that pairs modern indie pop with unfiltered emotion.

After several successful singles and EPs, Charlie Houston arrives with her debut album, Big After I Die. The nine-song album validates a lot of her high-profile public support that she’s been receiving lately. From touring across Canada with Charlotte Cardin to being recognized by Apple Music’s Zane Lowe, her sound has earned praise from some of the most respected voices in the music industry.

The effortless duality is the true brilliance of this project. Many of her peers telegraph their themes with overt production styles to match. Houston does a good job blending upbeat groovy production with chillingly honest lyrics. On a song like “Slut for Excel,” she regretfully reminisces while acknowledging her inability to remain present. This is one of the most ‘danceable’ songs on the project.

Big After I Die has an emotional through-line from top to bottom. Houston’s artistry shines on tracks like “Stupid Love” and “Pink Cheetah Print Slip.” They lean more to the centre of modern pop without feeling overproduced. There is a simplicity to these songs that makes them feel warm, safe, and more vulnerable. The writing is confident and dazzles with all the different production styles.

Album outro “I Need U” is a refreshing way to close; her most impressive vocal performance to date. Pairing production reminiscent of Men I Trust with her airy falsetto makes for a comforting combination.

Regardless of her previous success, Big After I Die is a pleasant surprise. Houston feeds her fans with enough tasty tracks to keep them satisfied, solidifying her place as a prominent figure in the modern indie pop landscape.
