Lola Young’s “Messy,” a catchy hit about self-loathing and a toxic relationship, dominated TikTok last year. Now, just over a year after her last album This Wasn’t Meant For You Anyway, the British singer is back with I’m Only Fucking Myself, a darker look at sudden fame and the self-sabotage that comes with it. Co-written and produced alongside Manuka and SOLOMONOPHONIC, the album keeps up with Young’s confessional stream of consciousness, dropping harsh truths and even harsher words—mostly against herself.
The songs and their blunt lyrics are paired with upbeat pop-rock arrangements, echoing what made “Messy” such an addictive hit. One of the album’s singles, “Not Like That Anymore,” kicks off with Young calling herself “a dumb little addict” whose “life sucks dick,” before exploding into a chorus that begs to be screamed along to. When the balance works, it really works.
It feels almost too easy to compare Lola Young to Amy Winehouse or Lily Allen—two other British songwriters who weren’t afraid to sing about being complicated and “messy.” But Young exists in a different era, one where every move is recorded online and the masses are crueler with every passing day. On the closing track, “who fking cares” (Young loves an expletive), she repeats the title like a mantra, a coping mechanism for the constant noise. It’s all we can do these days.
