Sarah Vanderzon Makes Her Move

On her new EP, Fortune Teller, the singer-songwriter blends country soul with the ease of an old friend.

By Cam Delisle

On Fortune Teller, Sarah Vanderzon makes a self-assured entrance into the ever-evolving landscape of modern Americana. The Québec native sidesteps debut clichés with a six-track EP that feels lived-in and energized.

“Are You With Me?” is a tender, soul-tinged plea that captures the ache of making love last. Her crystalline voice carries just enough weariness to make the question feel urgent. On the flipside, “Give Me One Reason” simmers with bluesy bravado.

Produced in Nashville with a clear admiration for analog warmth, Fortune Teller flirts with genre whilst remaining rooted. The title track twirls with banjo-backed optimism, and “Hey Partner” spins a classic barroom misread into a knowing wink. The EP shows Vanderzon not just predicting her future, but beginning to shape it.

How did you land on the name, Fortune Teller, and how does it define the project as a whole?

The focus track, Fortune Teller, felt the most fitting for the title of the EP because the song in itself represents the feel of it all—light-hearted and fun. The song itself is about finding the love of my life and, for the first time, not looking to the Universe for signs on if this relationship is worth it or not.

How do these songs translate in a live setting?

I do believe the live version will never be the same as the studio version, and I take a lot of joy in that! I want my listeners to have a different experience when they come to my show. Performing them live leaves more space for guitar solos, holding a vocal note longer than the recording and having that organic interaction with the audience.

How does the input of your collaborators impact your creative process?

Working on the record with Jordan was exactly how I described the EP: light-hearted and fun. It was like a breath of fresh air and his studio really felt like a safe space for both of us to bounce ideas off of each other.

How do you navigate the concept of telling a story on an EP?

When you break it down, the EP is a glimpse of the bigger picture that’s to come. This record is an introduction to who I am, in hopes that listeners are curious enough to know more about my music, adventuring deeper into the world of Sarah Vanderzon.

What emotions or experiences do you hope listeners carry into their own lives after hearing Fortune Teller?

Most importantly, I hope my EP leaves listeners wanting more—because there’s such beauty in releasing new music. I hope that each song allows listeners to interpret freely and deeply.
