Snotty Nose Rez Kids Keep Climbing With I'M GOOD, HBU?

The charismatic hip-hop duo are in fine form as they coast through a blazing series of uptempo tracks.

Following the release of 2021’s Life After, Snotty Nose Rez Kids broke through onto Canada’s biggest musical stage with their unforgettable Juno Awards performance and subsequent tour that found them jet-setting all over North America. The hip-hop duo’s latest finds them basking in the glow of their newfound success while flexing some of the most creative bars you’ll hear all year.

In the wake of hitting the Polaris Music Prize shortlist for a third time with more serious material about social issues and the pandemic, the duo has returned to celebrate coming out on the other side and making it even bigger than before on I’M GOOD, HBU? Over eight fired up tracks, rappers Darren “Young D” Metz and Quinton “Yung Trybez” Nyce drop some party-starting punchlines and let their infectious personalities and charisma carry listeners through straightforward but hard-hitting beats.

Bookended by humorous skits of the duo envisioning an out-of-touch radio show that tiptoes around the duo’s Indigenous heritage yet manages to offend anyway, it’s always a lot of fun to hear some of the typical rap tropes with a personal twist. Standout track “HOT PLANET” feels like a mission statement for the group as they use the theme of global warming to make puns about how they’re the hottest group around, but as it progresses they treat the topic seriously as well.

With some engaging beat-switches and plenty of content loaded into each verse, I’M GOOD ends up feeling a lot longer than it is. This is the sound of SNRK on top of the world, and this kind of hunger is what will aid them as they continue ascending.
