Review: Emanuel Brings Alt Therapy To Life On His Home Turf

The R&B crooner gets help from some special guests to give fans an intimate dose of soul.

by Candy Thomas

For his first time on stage in three years at Toronto’s Axis Club, R&B crooner Emanuel tapped hometown hero Kardinal Offishall to officiate the night’s festivities. The legendary rapper reminisced about the first time he heard Emanuel’s music and a call he had with English actor Idris Elba who was impressed by the young musician’s talent. Shortly after, Emanuel took to the stage. Illuminated by an angelic looking spotlight, he serenaded fans with his tender falsettos and romantic lyrics that are displayed in full on his new album, Alt Therapy.

Emanuel took fans on a devout journey of love and loss, performing notable tracks like “I Need You,” “Black Woman,” and “Hindsight;” with Toronto singer Dylan Sinclair making a surprise appearance to perform the track. Seemingly at the end of his set, the singer exited the stage to the crowd’s dismay. Heeding to the chants for an encore the singer returned to sing a few more for his adoring audience.

Though it’s been three years since the singer graced the stage, Emanuel had no trouble leaving his audience spellbound with his strong vocals and charming energy. Throughout the set, the singer could be seen smiling in-between notes. At the mic he’s happy, comfortable, confident, and, most of all, vulnerable. All-in-all, this Alt Therapy live experience was just what the doctor ordered.
