J Soulja’s SXSW Food Guide

From BBQ to tacos, the rapper lays down his favourite places to eat in Austin.

Intro by RANGE

SXSW is back after a forced two-year hiatus and Austin, TX is ready to welcome music fans into their BBQ-loving arms. From brisket that melts in your mouth to the sloppiest tacos, food is a huge part of the SXSW experience — but BBQ and tacos are just the tip of the cactus.

Born and raised in Austin, rapper J Soulja prides himself on knowing the best places to eat around town. Soulja made big waves last year when he dropped his fired-up More than Nothin LP. Showcasing his impeccable flow and radio-savvy production, the album earned him a spot on the Austin Chronicle’s 21 Rappers To Watch in 2021

Finding food can be overwhelming after a couple puffs or a few cans of Lone Star but according to the Swisher Sweets-approved emcee, there are lots of options to consider when the munchies hit. So roll one up and let J Soulja guide you through his top picks of the best food establishments to support while on the ground at SXSW — And don’t miss his set at the Smoke Out ATX showcase on March 19.

Juan in a Million
2300 E Cesar Chavez St.

“This hidden gem is a treasure to us Austinites. Located in downtown Austin, there’s normally a line wrapping the building so expect a wait time. But I guarantee it’s a breakfast taco that’s needed if visiting the city.”

Tony’s Jamaican Food
1200 E 11th St.

“One of my favourite spots to eat in Austin. If you’re looking for authentic food from the islands, Tony’s is that place. Their Jerk chicken and oxtails are unmatched. I love visiting Jamaica and these dishes definitely make me feel like I’m beachside”

Anythings Baked Potato
1326 Rosewood Ave.

“Created by one of Austin’s most prominent athletes, CJ Jerrells. This food truck is located in the heart of the city. Off of RoseWood Ave or what we consider the EASTSIDE (East Austin). Imagine some of your favourite dishes atop a giant baked potato!”

SLAB BBQ & Beer
9012 Research Blvd.

“This place had me as soon as I sat down and looked at their item names on the menu. The “Texas Trill” and the “Notorious PIG” are my go-to’s anytime I pull up to SLAB. Great BBQ with an ode to Texas Rap music makes a perfect combination.”

“I wasn’t too familiar with Birria until a few years ago. Seeing multiple posts on Instagram made me search for the nearest in the city. That’s how I stumbled upon Tejas Birria! Make sure you pull up early because they’re known for selling out daily. My favourites are of course the Birria Taco Plate and the Birria Quesadilla. You’ll definitely need a nap after this.”

Torchy’s Tacos

“If you’re from Austin, you’ve eaten some Torchy’s at least once. Torchy’s will catch your eye from the dope outside aesthetic to the dope baby devil logo. Anytime I’m here the “Trailer Park” tacos and the “Baja Shrimp” are definitely my go to’s.”

Community Vegan
1124 E 11th St.

“Wanting to switch it up and eat healthier with the same great taste? Community Vegan is the place for you. I’m still on the new side of expanding my palate when it comes to vegan food but this Black-owned food truck will surprise you with every dish you try. The Cauli Chicken Sandwich and the Oyster Mushroom wings are two of my favourites.”
