Nearly a quarter century after the first iterations of Canada’s iconic Women & Songs compilation series, RANGE is celebrating the legacy of this huge step forward in representation by taking a look back at the series that instantly became a road-trip staple for many. With 17 releases spanning decades and genres, these late-nineties/early-aughts “mix CDs” highlighted Canadian stars – with some international smash hits thrown into the mix – and became an early source of inspiration for many aspiring singers.
In honour of International Women’s Day (every day) we have compiled a modern day tribute to this classic compilation series with reimagined, genre-hopping covers. From Michaela Slinger’s re-imagining of Jann Arden’s “Insensitive,” Kaleah Lee’s channelling of Stevie Nick’s otherworldly energy on Fleetwood Mac’s “Dreams,” or KT Laine turning Mariah Carey’s “Always Be My Baby” into a hazy lullaby, this is a new era of Women & Songs. And to coincide with these incredible reimaginings, we asked these same artists to reminisce with us while we looked back on some of their favourite moments of women in music — from early inspirations and first concerts to the compilation series itself.
All proceeds raised for this project will go directly to the Downtown Eastside Women’s Centre in Vancouver, BC.
